The Mystic Art Show staff has decided – in what must have been a hard decision to make – to cancel the rest of the show. It was the only decision they could have made considering the updated forcast. Charlie will be passing right over Mystic as a tropical storm packing winds of 40–75 miles per hour. All the artists are right now packing up their art and their booths, while dissappointed the ones I talked with support the staffs decision as well.
Unfortunately this comes in a summer that has been quite slow already for Mystic. The art show generally brings lots of visitors to all the shops as well as the show itself.
I’m really not surprised they made this decision. While it is tough to do, no doubt it was the right decision. I’ve been following the Charlie as it goes north on the east coast, and there is NO doubt it will hit y’all today. Tents would have been flying along with the art work. It really is too bad, as you say, for the artists — especially with the slower summer. Hope you “weather the storm” in fine shape today!
Yep, it was the right decision, even though Charlie gave up the ghost while over Long Island. It turned out to be an overcast but rather pleasant Sunday. Very little wind (5-8mph) and no rain. Unfortunate, all things considered, but the staff made the only decision that could be made under the circumstances. The 7pm Saturday forecast was for 50+mph winds and Charlie crossing the sound and making land fall right over Groton/Mystic in the early to mid morning on Sunday.
They had to decide Saturday evening before artists went “home” for the evening as that was the last chance they had before the forecast landfall to let all the artists know. I’m sure a number of folk will criticize them considering the way Sunday turned out, but they did make the right decision. If any artists are really upset with the outcome, it will hopefully open up room for us to be in the show next year, it is a tough show to get into - tough jurying, dlot’s of returning artists (given preference) and a waiting list of new artists.
We “weathered” fine, actually today’s constant rain was the worst of it, especially while harvesting a Caravan full to overbrimming with bamboo. We got real strange looks from many folk in Mystic when they saw our car coming through downtown — sorta looked like it was stuffed with Christmas trees, only it was Bamboo inside and on top, with branches and leaves erupting from the side doors vents and rear hatch. Great fun!
