Feeding Time

We’ve been having an ant problem due to crumbs of all kinds on the rug. We asked Johann to try to leave fewer crumbs, because the ants were coming into the apartment for them. He didn’t like the noise of the vacuum, but we explained that we had to vacuum more now too to keep the crumbs to a minimum.

One morning I came out and found a swarm of ants covering several pieces of Tostitos on the floor. When I asked Johann to please pick up the chips he’s dropped, because it drew a lot of ants into the apartment, he said he deliberatley fed the ants because he wanted them to come. I told him that Mommy and Daddy didn’t want the ants to come and please, no more feeding the ants. He got upset and said he wanted them to come.

Why? Because he wanted to make his own ant farm like the boys did on “Backyard Safari”, an educational show we’ve been watching. He deliberately put food down to bring the ants in, so that he could capture them and put them in a jar. Not only is this kid smart, he’s incredibly resourceful! He also gets an “A” for creative problem solving.

So our compromise is for us to get the ant farm science kit we saw, where the ants will stay, hopefully, tightly sealed in their container never to escape, and there is to be no more feeding of the ants we are trying to get rid of, because Daddy is tired of getting ant bites on his feet and legs.
